Volunteering

Welcome and hello

Welcome and thank you for considering to choose to volunteer with The Scout Association

Scouting is the UK’s biggest coeducational youth organisation. We change lives by offering 6 to 25 year-olds fun and challenging activities, unique experiences, everyday adventure and the chance to help others so that we make a positive impact in communities.

Scouting helps children and young adults reach their full potential. Scouts develop skills including teamwork, time management, leadership, initiative, planning, communication, self-motivation, cultural awareness and commitment. We help young people to get jobs, save lives and even change the world.

This everyday adventure is possible thanks to our adult volunteers, who support Scouts in a wide range of roles from working directly with young people, to helping manage a Group, to being a Charity Trustee. We help volunteers get the most out of their experiences by providing opportunities for adventure, training, fun and friendship.

Why Scouting?

By choosing Scouting, you will make a real difference to the lives of young people and make a huge impact in your community. You have the opportunity to try new things, develop your talents, and continue to explore your values and beliefs.

Scouting offers a high quality balanced programme of opportunities for young people and award winning training to our adult volunteers.

Our vision

Scouting in 2018 will make a positive impact in our communities; prepare young people to be active citizens; embrace and contribute to social change.

Scouting in 2018 will be shaped by young people in partnership with adults; enjoyed by young people and more adult volunteers, as diverse as the communities in which we live.

Members of Scouting in 2018 will feel empowered; valued; proud.

A unique volunteering experience

The Scout Association is a volunteer led movement. Adult volunteers at The Scout Association work together in partnership. In return, we expect commitment from you and to take on the Values and Method of Scouting. These will shape how you take out your duties as a volunteer in Scouting.

Our Purpose

The Scout Association is part of the World Organisation of Scout Movements (WOSM), a worldwide educational youth movement.

In the UK, our Fundamentals provide guiding principles for Scouting and are key to all Members of The Scout Association. They describe what we are trying to achieve and how we do it in everyday Scouting.

There are three elements that make up the Fundamentals: the purpose, the values and the method.

The Purpose of Scouting

Scouting exists to actively engage and support young people in their personal development, empowering them to make a positive contribution to society.

The Values of Scouting

The Values provide everyone involved in Scouting with a guide for how we should act.

As Scouts we are guided by these values:

Integrity - We act with integrity; we are honest, trustworthy and loyal.

Respect - We have self-respect and respect for others.

Care - We support others and take care of the world in which we live.

Belief - We explore our faiths, beliefs and attitudes.

Cooperation - We make a positive difference; we cooperate with others and make friends.

The Method of Scouting

Scouting takes place when young people, in partnership with adults, work together based on the values of Scouting and:

  • Enjoy what they are doing and have fun
  • Take part in activities indoors and outdoors
  • Learn by doing
  • Share in spiritual reflection
  • Take responsibility and make choices
  • Undertake new and challenging activities
  • Make and live by their Promise.
